Preparing for Military Training

Prior to starting training it is vital you start preparing, now that you’re reading this means you’re already ahead of the curve. Before getting into the nitty gritty there are some vital fundamentals which you must start with, the main ones are as follows:

Researching Your Future Career;

Before starting any career it is important you know what your getting into. When starting a military career it matters that much more to know exactly what your potentially new career entails. Our team at Train2Troop aim to give you all the knowledge you need in all areas of the military.  If you lack the right research it can have adverse effects to your motivation throughout training. Researching the history of the service you would like to join is paramount to becoming a good recruit and standing out. You will be tested on the history of the service from the interview levels and all the way through training.

Preparing Your Body;

When you hear preparing your body, you may just think about preparing yourself physically which is crucial, but there are many things you can do you to make your whole body more prepared for military training such as;

  • Getting used to shaving everyday
  • Start eating the same nutrition you would in training
  • Stretch and monitor any ongoing injuries
  • Get used to walking and running in boots
  • Waking up early, around 0530
  • Cold showers

Learn The Military Language;

When you speak to someone in the military you might pick up on a few differences in the way they speak. In the military we use a 24 hour clock. Practice using the 24 hour clock before turning up to training as you’ll be using it everyday. We use the phonetic alphabet. Make sure you research this and understand it. The phonetic alphabet is widely used throughout the Armed Forces and you’ll definitely have to use it.

We refer to other personnel with their rank and surname. For example recruit Matthews or Marine Matthews or Corporal Matthews, obviously depending what rank they are. Understanding the rank structure is vitally important to know before starting training as you’ll need to understand the hierarchy of the military service.

It’s valuable to get comfortable speaking confidently and clearly from giving a lecture or brief to a dozen people or speaking to a single high ranking officer. We will go more in depth on this in leadership and striving for best recruit section.

Urgency;

During military training urgency is one of the many factors which the training team will be looking out for. Urgency will be a main cause you’ll be getting thrashed (into trouble), because you’ve been late to a detail. Try make it a habit to do stuff as quickly as possible such as getting changed, putting on your boots, as every little will help once you arrive at recruit training.

Educating Yourself

As we previously said your already way ahead of other recruits being on this course. We can’t express how important it is to know that great fitness alone won’t get you through training. Many recruits fail as they can’t rap their heads around the basics, one of the biggest examples is navigation. Get the ultimate head start with our navigation training, so when you turn up to training you will be all over it.

Educating yourself with your chosen services History. Like we previously stated you’ll be tested throughout training on history. Previous wars, big events, dates, medals awarded, all these you’ll need to know and remember. Knowing the history will show the training team you’ve been putting effort in and care about your career in your chosen service.

Get Use To Being Uncomfortable

Mindset it is the biggest attribute not just to passing training but being the best solider you can be.  Your mindset will be tested everyday throughout training. The training course is designed get you out your comfort zone, that’s when a person really learns what they are capable of.

You will be cold, wet, tired, hungry and extremely uncomfortable so best get use to it. Having cold showers would be a good start. Try the infamously uncomfortable Wet and Dry. Wet and dry is a survival technique used in the military. You must be able to function in wet uniform and change into dry uniform when sleeping. Then be able to get back into your wet uniform when conducting drills. Take away the initial shock and try wet and dry at home.
