Military Slang Glossary
- Bivvy: A bivouac - temporary field shelter, constructed with a waterproof poncho.
- Bootneck: A Royal Marines Commando.
- Bug-out: To conduct a military withdrawal.
- Cabin: A room, usually a bedroom.
- Chuck up: a. Praise (see also ‘Recommend’).
- Dhobi: To wash or launder.
- Dig out (blind): To make an all-out effort.
- Ditch: To throw away or discard.
- Drip: To complain.
- Essence: Beautiful, usually applied to one's Pash or Party.
- Gen: Genuine; the truth.
- Gash: Rubbish, waste.
- Gopping: Extremely unpleasant. Usually used to describe ugly women.
- Heads: Toilets.
- Icers: Very cold.
- Kit muster: A check, in which an individual’s complete equipment is laid out to ensure all is accounted for.
- Nod / Noddy: A Royal Marines recruit.
- Oppo: A close friend. The ‘opposite number’ of a two-man team;
- Pussers: Appertaining to the Service; stores and equipment issued from Service sources.
- Rig: A mode of dress. To ‘get rigged’ is to get dressed.
- Run ashore: To leave ship or barracks for recreation or relaxation.
- Scratcher: A bed, bunk, or bedspace (see also ‘pit’).
- Scran: Food.
- Turn-to: To parade or begin work.
- Waz / wazzer: Fantastic.
